About

SlateHearth started life as a working slate hearth manufacturer based in Cumbria — spending years cutting, finishing and delivering natural slate hearths to homes across the UK. When the workshop closed, the knowledge didn’t go anywhere. This site exists to put that experience to work for homeowners who want straight answers about stoves, hearths and home heating — without the showroom sales pitch.

What We Cover

SlateHearth is an independent UK guide to wood burning stoves, hearths, installation, regulations and home heating. We cover buying guides, product comparisons, installation advice, maintenance, fuel choices, supplier information and the latest UK regulations — including Ecodesign 2022, HETAS requirements and smoke control zones.

Whether you’re choosing your first stove, planning a hearth installation, or trying to understand whether your address falls within a smoke control area, we aim to give you the clearest possible answer — based on real knowledge, not marketing copy.

Our Editorial Standards

SlateHearth has no commercial relationships with any stove manufacturer, retailer or installer. We don’t accept payment for editorial coverage, and our recommendations are based solely on research, industry knowledge and reader feedback. When we link to a product or supplier, it’s because we genuinely think it’s useful — not because anyone has paid us to say so.

We also believe in being upfront about how the site works financially. Some links on SlateHearth are affiliate links — if you click one and make a purchase, we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. Those commissions help cover the costs of running the site and writing new guides. They do not influence what we recommend or how we write about anything.

A Note on Professional Advice

The guides on this site are for general information. Wood burning stove installation must comply with UK Building Regulations, and rules on smoke control areas vary by local authority. We always recommend consulting a HETAS-registered installer before committing to any installation, and checking with your local council if you’re unsure about smoke control restrictions in your area.
